![]() ![]() “After careful consideration and evaluation, we found the perfect home for SketchBook with a company formed by people who previously built and evangelized the SketchBook brand.” “While we value SketchBook and feel an obligation to the community … we also recognize that much has changed at Autodesk,” wrote Autodesk VP for automotive, concept design and XR Thomas Heermann. ![]() This week, Autodesk broke that radio silence to announce that development of Sketchbook has been taken over by a new independent company, Sketchbook Inc. Now developed by the people ‘who built and evangelized’ the brand The app’s social media accounts also went silent, with tweets from Sketchbook pausing in December 2020. The spin-off marks the latest change of ownership (and name: it has now lost the capital ‘B’) for Sketchbook, which was orignally developed by Alias and acquired by Autodesk along with Maya in the 2000s.Īt Autodesk, it went through a number of further changes in format and pricing, eventually ending up in 2018 as a free app for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, with a separate commercial Enterprise edition.Īfter that, things seemed to stagnate: the last update to the desktop version was in 2019, which was to remove the need to log in to use it, although the mobile editions were updated more recently. The apps will continue to be available from the Apple, Google and Microsoft app stores, where they can currently be downloaded for free, but delivered by their new owners.Īnother change of owner for the veteran digital sketching software Scroll down for news of the price changes.Īutodesk has spun off SketchBook, its digital sketching software, to a new company, Sketchbook Inc. sketching feels at home to me in sketchbook.īut I have to check out Concepts it seems to be geared towards my field of architecture.Originally posted on 25 June 2021. the handles opacities and the way the brush layers its very traditional looking. Sketchbook is geared more to the traditionally inclined. Idk about freezing I got the lowest end 8th gen ipad and never experience slowdowns even with a 3600x2400 resolution 50+ layer drawing with effects gallore. You can fiddle with the tolerance of the fill tool to not be pixel perfect in your lineart but you do need a bit of accuracy. There's opacity in fill tool but its only limited to the gradient option. It autosaves everytime you quit out of the programĪs for Fill option nah, its pretty basic here. You can suspend a drawing and work on another by just going to the gallery and start a new file. If you want to get high details in Sketchbook even if you zoomed in you need to start with a pretty high resolution. ![]() Most of the limitations you mention is due to the Raster nature of Sketchbook. ![]() The erase tool acts like its real life counterpart which is fine but what if I just want to get rid off a line entirely without having to use my Apple Pencil the same way you would a real eraser.įrom your description it seems that Concepts is a vector based drawing program, Sketchbook is mostly a raster based drawing program. If there was it would help a lot as I wouldn’t need to bother being pixel perfect with the line work That also means I haven’t been able to draw in as high detail as I could in Concepts. Combined with lines having massive aliasing which you can see when you zoom in, the fill tool then has instances where it won’t fill the area you want it to fill. There is no snapping tool to close up spaces between lines so if you’re not pixel perfect that messes up the fill tool. You don’t have to be the best with the Apple Pencil to get a smooth curve In Concepts it’s pretty clear that the app is smoothing your line to get a nice curve. Half the time I can’t see if it’s doing anything at all. The tool that smooths your lines (predictive strokes) isn’t as good as Concepts. What if I want semi transparency on one area, not the entire layer? There is no way to alter the transparency of the fill tool. In Concepts it retains the quality no matter what your zoom level or whether you exported the image or not There is loss of clarity/quality when you zoom in or share. What if I want to suspend a drawing for now and start another? It might be I just haven’t found how to do the things but: Before I was using the free version of Concepts but I decided to give Sketchbook a try and I found a couple of things. I saw the high rating and gave it a shot. It went free and I got interested partly because it had auto symmetry. I could be completely wrong with my impressions (in fact, let me know how to do any of these if there is a way). ![]()
